Crinan
The Crinan Canal is a 14 km canal that connects the Firth of Clyde with the Inner Hebrides and allows boats to make the journey without having to travel through the Mull of Kintyre. It’s a trip we took a few times when I was younger, and the fifteen locks seemed like something out of another world to me. This sweater feels like something that fishermen and seafarers of the 1800s would enjoy wearing, just as much as I do today.
GAUGE
16 stitches x 24 rows per 10 cm / 4" with 5 mm [US 8] needles in Stitch Pattern, after blocking.
YARN
The sample was knit in Jamieson’s Shetland Aran (100% wool, 92 m / 101 yds per 50 g) in the colourway 343 Ivory.
Size 4 worn with 16cm of positive ease
CONSTRUCTION
Crinan is a top-down drop-shoulder sweater worked in all-over double moss stitch. It’s started with the back and shaped with short rows. Then fronts are picked up and joined, and the body and sleeves are worked in the round. The neck, hem, and cuffs are finished with deep ribbing and rolled edges.

16 stitches x 24 rows per 10 cm / 4" with 5 mm [US 8] needles in Stitch Pattern, after blocking.
NEEDLE SIZES
5 mm needles [US 8] for body and sleeves, 4 mm [US 6] for cuffs, hem, and neckband.
